If you've been to Bangkok or Singapore and you enjoyed the nightlife available there, then you may just be bored to death by how tame Johor Bahru is, especially when the most frequent nightlife option is karaoke. Then again, this isn't to say that there aren't options for everyone, but there aren't any huge party streets or boundary pushing venues, so expect to settle for TGI Friday's on some nights.
For those who want a safe night with some drinking and dancing without visiting sleazy establishments where the possibility of extortion is high, there are a few good options. Jalan Harimau Taarom, which parallels Tebrau Highway as it juts northeast of city center, has a few quality bars, including La Primeur. The Fun ZON in the duty-free area to the east of the causeway to Singapore is another good option, with a fine sampling of pubs and clubs (Avenue, Roost, Walker's, Palm Lounge, Cabana, etc.). This is where you go if you'd like your nightlife under one roof. Other excellent nightlife choices in Johor Bahru include Danga Bay, where karaoke is quite a draw once the sun sets; Bert's Keller Pub, an institution in JB when nightlife institutions are quite rare; the medley of hookah bars along Jalan Tun Adbul Razak (near the causeway); Aruku the Walk (in the Plaza Sentosa off of Jalan Sutera), which is a Kuala Lumpur style nightclub that may be the best in town; and Jazz and Blues Discovery, a club with a misleading name and a good line-up of dance tunes when the weekend arrives.
