Lake Tekapo is an international dark sky reserve as well as scenic reserve. It's breathtaking sights of snow capped mountains reflected in the clear lake leave you speechless. The Mount John University Observatory was declared as the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012, one of only four such reserves around the world. The local business Earth and Sky offers guided daytime tours and nighttime star gazing tours. Truly a remarkable experience, southern stars, aurorae, meteor showers and much more! Here you can also do helicopter/glider tours of the famous Mount Cook and surrounding mountains. We only drove through this spot but this is the first place we would go back to.
