Self-billed as "Auckland's hippest strip," Ponsonby Road, in our estimation, is probably the coolest little stretch of road that the city has to offer. With a touch of Bohemia, a touch of art culture, and a touch of contemporary fashion, Ponsonby Road will indulge your desire for a stroll in a suburb that's close enough to the city to reach in little time (less than a ten minute ride) and far enough that the tourists won't be everywhere.
Ponsonby Central earns its name from the exposed wood and brick facades of its boutique space, although it doesn't look much like the "malls" as we'd normally expect. Dizengoff is a trendy coffee spot that gets really busy, SPQR is the street's premiere Italian joint, and La Zeppa's got those Spanish tapas. There are even more bars and clubs along this popular avenue, including the always-packed, mixed drinks-vibe of Golden Dawn, clubbers choice Ponsonby Social Club, the classy Longroom, hipster nook Chapel Bar, and a number of other establishments that will have plenty of beer, cocktails, and even some live music once the weekend hits. Note:Because Ponsonby is a gentrified, historic district, there are plenty of signposts to its seedy past worth seeing during your time in the district, including the famous Three Lamps, a replica of a 19th century icon.
