There are two quality ski resorts within a half an hour's drive: The Cardrona Valley Alpine Resort to the northeast and the Coronet Peak Ski Area, both of which provide spectacular winter snow settings (June to October) for all experience levels. For the rest of the year, there is the once-deserted gold mining community of Macetown. All that remains are the faithfully restored Schoolmaster's House and Bakehouse that look down on the valley of the Arrow River, and are only accessible by a 4-wheel drive/mountain biking track from the Arrowtown car park. You'll cross the Arrow River an astounding twenty-two times, which can frequently rise as high as your thighs (or the wheel well of your vehicle) depending on the time of year on a round trip that clocks in at just over 30 km (19 miles). There is camping available in Macetown, although be sure to exhibit the same levels of respect for the grounds that you would in any park.
