If you're one to take in local history through intriguing exhibits and displays, then a few hours in the compact Lakes District Museum is in order. Just north of Queenstown in the preserved gold rush community of Arrowtown, the museum is housed in the old town bank after an initial stint in the billiards room of the local hotel. It's obvious the effort and care that has been put into displaying artifacts of settling history, from the main mining focus to the genuine tools, trade, and clothing of 18th century Arrowtown.
Part of any true adventure is reaching at least a basic understanding of the culture you are experiencing; take a break from jet boating trips and gondola rides and make a stop at the Lakes District Museum. Adult entry is $8 NZD.
Note:If you're looking to supplement an agenda of great cafes and old-time buildings, mountain bike or 4-wheel drive your way through knee deep river passes to the abandoned mining town adjacent to Arrowtown called Macetown. Read more in our Arrowtown activity summary.
