Much of the fun of Skippers Canyon will be had in just getting there. Located about a half an hour ride from Queenstown via tour bus or Jeep, Skippers Road is one of the most precipitous and picturesque roads in New Zealand; luckily for you, you'll be able to appreciate the beauty of the scenery and danger of the one-way, cliff-side gravel roads from somewhere other than the driver's seat. Once you traverse the original suspension bridge that rests about 90 meters (295 feet) above the Shotover River, the old gold mining settlement of Skippers Point will be your destination. Only the homestead, school, and cemetery remain, although they've been carefully preserved. Most tour operators will provide a historical commentary of the area to go with the few hours of touring; we've included a few options to choose from.
Note:Jet boat rides are quite popular along the Shotover River. Some tour operators combine a tour of Skippers Canyon with one of these death-defying rides through the gorges, turning it into a full day of excitement.
