For a less touristy adventure that takes you through a breathtaking and relatively untouched region of central Peru, look no further than Lares Valley, approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of Cuzco. This trek winds through a remote and beautiful region of the brown Andes, stopping at glacial lakes, thermal springs and several traditional villages and farms that give visitors a glimpse into what, if any, remains of authentic Quechua living in the modern age.
Because this particular hike is not subject to government regulations, trips can be booked any time at relatively short notice. However, if you plan to add a visit to Machu Picchu at the end of your journey (which most companies offer), it is best to make your reservations early.
