If your explorations into the Peruvian capital take you towards the city center's Plaza de Armas, consider making a pit stop at the Mercado Central (four blocks to the southeast). It's a whole city block of shopping highlighted by a market of fresh fish, meats of all kinds, colorful produce and food stalls to satisfy the hungry. And the atmosphere? Well, let's just say some distinct aromas and a blasé interior probably aren't going to win this market any honorable mentions in your travel blog; still, there should be enough intriguing and inexpensive morsels here to make the both the cultural and gastronomic experience worth your while.
Note:Beware the ever present pick pockets when things get crowded outside. Watch your valuables or, better yet, come without them.
