This adventure is located in one of the most untouched and remote places in Europe: the Azores. In the biggest island of the Portuguese archipelago, Sao Miguel island, lies the beautiful Lagoa do Fogo (translated as Fire Lagoon). Once a crater of a volcano, this protected natural reserve is beautiful as seen by the viewpoint next to the road that connects from the city of Ribeira Grande, but is absolutely stunning when you are down there. Although there is another (longer) trail coming from Água de Pau in the opposite side, this hike is much more scenic and carries a lot more adrenaline. To get down there is a real adventure: it takes about thirty challenging minutes to hike down and the steps are crude and big both in height and width.
The reward in the end is the amazing 360º scenery. Enjoy the scale of the untouched nature around you. Additionally, you can also refresh yourself with a bath in the lagoon waters, which is perfect for recharging energies for the hike back up! This is a truly scenic hike and an one of a kind experience!
