Just a short bike ride Southeast of the tourist haven of Edinburgh you'll find Craigmillar Castle. Grab a rental bike from one of the various bike shops in downtown Edinburgh and follow the scenic streets through the Edinburgh suburbs. Numerous pedestrian paths offer a scenic view of Scotland away from the tourists. Pass by King Arthur's seat which is an extinct volcano an offers an exceptional view of the city.
Craigmiller Castle itself is regarded as one of the most pristine examples of a Medieval castle to be found in all of the United Kingdom and Europe. Its walls remain untouched and give a real sense of the majesty of a medieval castle without the artificial feel that some of the more popular "restored" castles can sometimes have. The history of Craigmillar Castle dates back to 1425 when the tower house was first built. The castle has undergone numerous renovations and additions in its time since then and has seen it's share of military action along with Edinburgh castle.
Admission to the castle costs 5.50 pounds for adults and 3.50 for children. Bring a packed lunch and enjoy a scenic picnic on these historic grounds.
