Established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904 just north of Durban, the Phoenix Settlement was meant to be a spiritual retreat and safe haven for a burgeoning Indian population in South Africa. Most intriguing to visitors is the Mohatma Gandhi Museum, the recent rebuilt home that not only provides further insight into Gandhi himself but also into the pacifist movement he led and how it related to South Africa. You'll encounter a pervasive spirituality here, both in the members of the commune and those who have come to pay tribute. If you're one whose adventures tend more reflection and tranquility, you'll feel right at home.
