One of the oldest goldmines open to the public in South Africa, the Old Kromdraai Gold Mine is located on the Witwatersrand and continues to provide guided tours with a sense of the realism (you actually go in to see an abandoned operation) and without the danger of true mining (you won't get "black lung"; oh wait, that's coal mining). For R50 (about $6 US), you can throw on a mining helmet and walk in the same steps as the men who pursued their fortunes here. It's definitely a cool alternative for those who've already seen plenty of big game on their South Africa adventure.
