Hill strikes a balance between the past and the present, a fact made most obvious by its two main attractions, the Constitutional Courthouse (the highest court in South Africa) and the old prison fort, where the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and other prisoners were at one time detained.
More salient to the history-oriented traveler is the fort, which hosts daily tours and is actually well kept; so dispel any ideas of dank, dark torture chambers. Tours of the Constitutional Court are also interesting, being that this is the place where work is done for human rights every day. Oh yeah, and they let you sit in the judge's chair, which is pretty cool.
