For those who have wondered where the Spaghetti westerns that made Clint Eastwood a household name were shot, then look no further than the Tabernas Desert. Less than a two hour drive east of Granada, this landscape of badlands and open desert is the only one of its kind in Spain and perpetuates an allure of spaces in which humankind was never meant to flourish (unless you're talking about the mass production of cheesy, fantastical Westerns).
It may be best to start in the town of Tabernas to the east, which is located at the foot of Sierra Alhamilla and provides local food, drink, and accommodation. From there, different tours can be arranged to have you scrambling through the desert ramblas (valleys), making dusty tracks in off-road vehicles, and following in the footsteps of film legends by taking studio tours.
Note:Be aware that the heat and lack of shade in the desert make it quite dangerous, so if you're inexperienced, pay the money for a professional guide. They know the area and will make the necessary precautions.
