A moderately difficult hike of over 7.3 km (4.5 miles), the Rio Verde Trail is an excellent day trip from Granada if you're looking to get away from the ever-watchful eye of the Alhambra and into a part of the world where humankind still recognizes a certain subservience to nature. About an hour's drive south from Granada and located within the Sierra de Tejeda range, this trail follows the Rio Verde (Green River) along a largely mountainous route that will sometimes include steep incline and decline, so be sure that you are moderately fit when the time comes to hike. The trail also crosses three spectacular waterfalls where, depending on the heat of the day, you'll be more or less be inclined to stay a while an refresh yourself.
There are a few outdoor adventure companies in the area that allow you to experience of the Rio Verde (check our links), including activities like canyoning/abseiling and canoeing/kayaking. Although you could do it yourself, anyone foreign to Andalusia should utilize a trusted guide first.
