Once a haven for backpackers travelling on the cheap, the mass tourist frenzy that is Bangkok's Khao San Road has given rise to a few 7elevens, McDonald's and the like over the past 15 years. Still, if you're looking to mix it up with other travelers, you can't go wrong here.
Daily, this relatively short street is jam packed with thousands of vendors and visitors purchasing trinkets, grabbing some food or downing a few inexpensive Chang brews. Restaurants and bars are ubiquitous, offering not a whole lot of authenticity but plenty of fine socializing and people watching. There are even a few fruit and veggie stalls if you're craving something fresh. The bottom line is, you won't find the real Bangkok in Khao San. For the spectacle alone, however, it's well worth a visit, and chances are you'll probably have a pretty good time while you're at it.
