Every night around dusk on trusty Chang Klan Rd (just east of the Old City Square) a bulk of Chiang Mai vendors sets up shop, hawking all kinds of wares from T-shirts to lamps to mass-produced paintings and everything in between. Don't let the tone of this review fool you, however; as inescapable as the experience may be for foreigners, it can also be a pretty enjoyable one if you know what you're getting into. There are plenty of bargains to be had for travelers who know their way around a haggling session, and for all the imitation goods available you can still pick up one or two unique buys from actual local artists. And as an added benefit, Chang Klan Rd has a few beer-house bars and restaurants to satisfy those uninterested in material goods. So go ahead: peruse the selection, grab a bite to eat from a nearby food stall, then try your luck nabbing an inexpensive little something for friends or family back home. You could do a lot worse on a weeknight.
