Though it's all too easy to confuse Doi Suthep with Wat Phra That, the former is the mountain on which the latter is located. Ok, now that we've gotten that cleared up, let's take a look at the temple itself, beautifully situated overlooking the city of Chiang Mai below. It's history dates back to 1386 and the myth of the "white elephant." Since then, Wat Phra That has slowly grown and become more ornate, containing (among other things) multiple terraces, numerous golden Buddha statues, a 309-step dragon-lined stairway and a gold-leafed chedi adorning its spectacular top. Both a major religious site and tourist attraction, you can count on a large crowd to be in attendance no matter when you visit, but don't let this deter your efforts. Even if for nothing else than the view of the city, this is a spectacular place to visit.
