For simplicity's sake, we've dubbed the stretch of Kotchasarn Road that connects the ends of Tha Phae and Loi Kroh Roads the unofficial "Tha Phae Area." Here, near the western gate to the Old City, you'll encounter some of Chiang Mai's most well-established nightlife venues catered predominantly to "farangs," or Westerners. Prices tend to be a little higher and there's a definite girly-bar theme towards the Loi Kroh end, but it's an easy go-to if you're aimlessly wandering in search of a few bars close to your hotel. Mainstays include John's Place (for sports fans), THC Rooftop Bar (for the chilled-out Jamaican in all of us), as well as clubs like Lucky which will provide all the after-dark mischief you could possibly want (just be careful, as fights have been known to break out with some frequency here). There are a few restaurants nearby too, but the Starbucks and McDonald's should cue you in to the fact that they're nothing to write home about. Overall it can be a good time, albeit not incredibly authentic. Bottoms up.
