Having already checked out other bazaars and street fairs in Thailand, Phuket's Weekend Variety Market may strike you as slightly cliche: the expected assortment of inexpensive clothing (some second-hand), accessories, trinkets, crafts and, of course, food. Still, as long as you don't go expecting some revelatory shopping experience, this massive, congested amalgam of indoor and outdoor stalls definitely provides both entertainment and at least some cultural insight regardless of whether or not you actually intend to buy anything. Sample some fresh fruit, cooked noodles or fried insects, then try your luck at haggling over a curio or two that catch your eye. If you know what your doing, clothing in particular can be purchased here at incredibly deep discounts. It will be up to you to decide if that warrants the 20 minute drive from Patong (where many travelers opt to reside).
Note:The market opens up shop Saturday and Sunday nights from 4 to 9 pm.
