Of all the gorges and waterfalls in Central New York, Rattlesnake Gulf is by far the most geologically diverse.
The one day hike starts off walking upstream in the river and climbing four waterfalls, each geologically unique from another. This area is prone to mud slides and flash floods.
The four waterfalls range in size from 30 feet to 80 feet.
Climbing experience is a must. No ropes are needed for this adventure, but free-form rock climbing is required.
July 1 - Sept. 1
Saturday and Sunday only.
After Embark's @jambo showed me this gorge in 2003, I studied the area via topographic map. This was before Google Maps and Satellite maps. It had to be requested from NYGIS. Since then, I've been taking this adventure every year. Each year, the land, gorge and river change so much. Rattlesnake Gulf is a wonder to behold and learn from, and brings a new experience every time you go.
