Ready for the trek of a lifetime? Experience the entire breadth of the Grand Canyon in one day, on your own two feet. Journey through it all: from the pinyon-juniper of the South Rim, down among colorful rock layers to the rugged desert of the inner canyon, to the raging Colorado River, then climbing up and up, into the lush ponderosa forest of the North Rim. Most people glimpse this natural wonder of the world from the comfort of South Rim overlooks, but you can evoke the adventurer in yourself and push your own limits, to experience the Grand Canyon like few people can.
I live in Flagstaff, AZ and make frequent trips to the Grand Canyon. I am familiar with trip logistics, geological and historical points of interest, and challenges of hiking in the desert.
I am an experienced backpacker and will carry extra food and water and first aid kit. In addition, I have 4 years outdoor guiding experience and am wilderness first responder certified.
My role on the tour will be to provide support for the long hike, keep us on a safe but effective pace, and help set car shuttles for transportation.
This tour is best done with 2 parties, each hiking from opposite sides of the canyon. The vehicle shuttle is more than 200 miles and 5 hours of driving, so if you have 2 vehicles and enough people to split the group, then we can swap keys when we pass each other in the middle of the canyon to save on shuttle time. I will arrange for a highly qualified partner guide to accompany the other hiking party. If necessary, we can drive our personal vehicle to fit additional people on the shuttle.
If you have a small group that prefers not to split up, Driving will take a total of 15-17 hours for the entire group. An alternative is the public shuttle from one rim to the other, for $85 per person.
You will need all your own hiking gear (boots, backpack, trekking poles, etc.) and vehicles.
Group discount for parties of more than 4 people (before splitting up, if applicable)! Each additional person is only $60.
Full refund 2 days prior to tour.
Grand Canyon Village, exact location flexible
South Rim to North Rim:
If setting our own shuttle is necessary, then early in the morning or the night before the big day, we will deliver a vehicle at North Rim parking area, then return to Grand Canyon Village (approximately 11 hours total time required)
6am: Catch park bus from visitor center and ride to South Kaibab Trail.
The typical route follows South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River at Bright Angel Creek, then past Phantom Ranch along the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Total distance is 21 miles, traveling 4,780 feet down then 5,760 feet up.
We can arrange to take any route you wish. Another option is to take Bright Angel Trail from the South Rim (longer but less steep downhill). We can also hike North to South along either route.
Be prepared to finish the hike after sunset. This is a LONG day, but well worth the endurance fest for an unforgettable Grand Canyon adventure.
