Lakes of the Clouds Trail is a 13 mile out and back trail located near Westcliffe, Colorado that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking & mountain biking and is accessible from May until October.
May 25- July 30
I have hiked the both of the trails to the gorgeous lakes of the Clouds on two different occasions and feel comfortable traversing the route. Sitting at the base of spread eagle peak, the trout filled lakes cascade into one another and down a valley in a tepid brook. During the time I have spent on this hike I have encountered deer, elk, grouse and a black bear, as well as a plethora of wild plants and fungi. This hike is on my Colorado top 5 list and, though challenging, quite peaceful.
Cold weather gear is important, and backpacks, light equipment packing, and capable hiking shoes are paramount. Water purification is recommended as well as trash bags to pack out garbage. Cameras are recommended as well as fishing gear for those interested.
Directions from : Take Hermit Road west out of Westcliffe to where the jeep road intersects the Rainbow Trail. The sign is hard to find. It is off to the right on the north side of the road, after you get into the trees. Park along the road.
