The oldest national park in Romania and one of the last true wilderness areas in Europe, Retezat National Park is a must if you love nature, adventure and hiking. Also known as the 'blue eye land' for its over 80 glacial lakes and tarns, including the largest glacial lake in Romania, Bucura (8,8 ha) and the deepest, Zanoaga (29 meters), Retezat has a maximum altitude of 2,509 meters and over 20 peaks above 2,000 meters. Our tour includes a two day hike to discover the lakes Bucura and Zanaoaga and many other smaller glacial lake while hiking the highest peak Peleaga. One night will be spent camping with the tent.
Upon request, preferably July-September 2015. The price is calculated for a group of 6 people and includes transportation from and to Bucharest (around 1,100 km), accommodation and guide fees. The price will be lower in case of a closer meeting place, depending on your arrival location. The price also varies depending on the group size.
I am certified national guide and an experienced hiker. To ensure the best safety measures, we will be accompanied also by a local mountain guide.

Being located 8-9 hours driving distance from Bucharest, if possible, it's better to land in Cluj or Sibiu so more days can be planned for the actual hike.

  • Day 1
    We depart from Bucharest or your other landing place. In case we depart from Bucharest, the drive will be long, roughly the whole day, but extremely scenic. We will be accommodated in a traditional village very close to the starting point of our itinerary.
  • Day 2
    We start hiking early morning and camp at over 2,000 meters altitude on the shore of Lake Bucura. We also hike the highest peak of Retezat and the third highest in the Romanian Carpathians.
  • Day 3
    We hike to Zanoaga, the deepest glacial lake in Romania, and take a short detour to see amazing panoramas. We go back to the village where we spent the night.
  • Day 4
    We explore the remote and beautiful villages around the national park and discover off the beaten track attractions like the mysterious Densus Church and Corvinilor, the largest Gothic castle in Romania.
  • Day 5
    We drive back to Bucharest or to your other departing destination.
