The summit of Mount San Jacinto stands 10,834 feet above sea level, and is the second highest mountain range in Southern California. No more than a two hour drive from San Diego, the mountain's magnificent granite peaks, subalpine forests, and fern-bordered mountain meadows offer a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy a scenic, high-country wilderness area. The park offers two drive-in campgrounds near the town of Idyllwild. Most of the park is a designated wilderness area enjoyed by hikers and backpackers.
This is a 2-day/1-night hiking and camping trip. The hike starts at around 6,000 ft. above sea level and we will summit at 10,834 ft. The campsite will be at 9,700 ft. so be advised that altitude sickness is a risk.
The trailhead is about a 2 1/4 hour drive from Downtown San Diego in Idyllwild, CA. We will leave early as it will be a long first day. We will hike to camp (approx 5-6 hours), make camp and relax for the evening. We will wake up early the 2nd day, summit, and then head back to our vehicle for the ride back to San Diego.
Temperatures are cool even in summer up top so bring long underwear and warm clothing to change into.
