Lake Katherine is nestled on the edge of the treeline in a beautiful basin below the peaks of Santa Fe Baldy, the largest mountain directly seen from the city of Santa Fe. This is a two day, one night backcountry backpacking trip of roughly 15 miles total. The entirety of the hike is above 10,000 feet, with the option of climbing and summiting 12,622 ft Santa Fe Baldy on the second morning. This hike is great for newcomers and experienced backpackers alike, and I will do my best to provide any knowledge I can on backpacking, the landscape, and photography!
Any dates between July 15 and August 15
I am an eagle scout with over a months backpacking experience In New Mexico, and much more camping experience. I have led others on this specific trip multiple times.
  • Tents for 5 people (if needed)
  • Packs, Sleeping Bags, and Pads for 2 people (if needed)
  • All Food
  • All other gear needed for backpacking, I will supply a comprehensive list, however I will supply any extra gear I own.
Due to the fact that the entirety of this trip will take place above 10,000 feet, this hike may be challenging to anyone not acclimated or not in proper shape. If this is your first backpacking trip, fear not, we can take things slow, and I can provide tips for beforehand preparation. This is a well maintained trail and popular destination for backpackers.
Full refund 2 days prior to tour.
TBD, either in town, or at the trailhead
  • Day 1
Leave from Santa Fe at 8AM, drive to the trailhead located at the Ski Basin parking lot. Begin hike no later than 9. The Day 1 hike will be roughly 7 miles, hiking through aspen and pine forest, crossing 3 small streams, ascending up to a saddle area, then descending to the lake. We will make camp upon arrival, then enjoy the rest of the day by the lake. Breakfast not included, lunch eaten on trail, and dinner at camp.
  • Day 2
There are two options for Day 2. Traditionally I have broken camp early and climbed the grassy slope behind the lake to the ridge of Mt. Baldy, then hiked the ridgeline to the 12,622' summit before hiking down to the saddle and returning along the same trail hiked in Day 1. This is optional but highly recommended. The other option is to hike back the exact same way we came on Day 1. Breakfast eaten at camp, lunch on trail. Trip finishes early to mid afternoon.
