Just a short drive over the Kroumirie Mountains and its surprisingly dense pine forest you come upon the stunning beach town of Tabarka. Known mostly for its famous Tabarka Jazz Festival in late summer it is a favorite hangout for locals. The dramatic coastline and spectacular views make it a site worth seeing for travelers of all kinds. While most people would be satisfied taking one of their signature pirate ship cruises, hiking up to the Genoese Fort to catch a marvelous view of the city, or relaxing with the locals smoking chicha and drinking coffee by the beach I doubt that is going to tame the adventurous spirits of this community. Although to venture into Tabarka if you are not a local is an adventure in itself! You will definitely want to brush up on a bit of Arabic and French, some basic skills will get you far.
But if you are looking to do something that is a little more exciting I would suggest meeting up with the local dive center for a undersea Mediterranean expedition that may be what you are thirsting for. The Mehari Diving Center is your best option. They are equipped to handle all skill levels and are located right in the heart of Tabarka. The terrain is breathtaking, over 20 tunnels as large as 30 meters and coral reefs cover the sea floor. There are a variety of different fish to see Octopus, Rays and Merous to name a few. The area is protected and the waters remain fairly calm. They have two boats measuring 10 meters and all modern equipment is provided. You are sure to be completely fulfilled!
