Known in Turkish as Odtü Ormanı, Orman Park is the nearest sphere of wilderness to the capital city of Ankara. Once a landscape of naked hills, the nearby Middle East Technical University (Odtü in Turkish) has brought this natural area a long way with a massive reforestation project, creating a destination for lovers of the outdoors in a city not known for such accessibility.
Located at the southern boundaries of Ankara, there are a number of footpaths that wind around Lake Eymir, but the best views are in the hills that overlook the lake. Leisurely hiking is probably the most popular activity in the park, while mountain biking on many of the trails is also pretty common. When you need a break from your Ankara culture tour, be sure to take Konya Yolu street into Orman Park. It's not very developed, but it is a touch of wilderness on the city's doorstep and that's refreshing in itself.
