A prominent neighborhood in Ankara's downtown (Çankaya), Kavaklıdere is most notable for its central shopping street, Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi, which bustles with every possible opportunity at commerce as it works its way south toward Kuğulu Park. And although the horde of high end boutiques and bridal shops may be a bit off-putting for anyone used to a more rugged traveling environment, the good news is that there’s plenty of food and drink available just off of Tunali.
Look to parallel Tunus Caddesi and Bestekar Sokak if nightlife is in the cards. The patio at Mood Shifters is always popping, Cafe Bien has all the class of an Italian vinoteca, karaoke is the rage at Retrox, and Bomonti Brasserie might be the best combination of club and grub in Ankara. Then again, with two dozen establishments in about a two block radius, you'll be hard pressed NOT to find something of interest.
Your breakfast, lunch, and dinner options aren’t all that far away either, and might very well end up being the very place you closed out the night before. Bestekar Caddesi in particular has a lot going on at its south end near where it terminates in Tunali. Think Turkish meyhanes, cafe sandwiches, gastropubs (say yes to Bistro Boteco), soup joints, and even Chinese food. You'll find quite an assortment throughout Kavaklidere, so wander anywhere around Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi and you'll quiet that grumble in your belly in no time.
Overall, Kavaklidere is an excellent option in central Ankara if you’re feeling social. It might be short on our typical assumption of culture, but that’s ok; this is the type of neighborhood that’s happening NOW.
